This is going to be a quick one, as I’m dashing off for a girls’ night out.
The original Star Wars trilogy brought my childhood great joy; the disappointing prequels tarnished that. Thank the Force for Episode VII, for the joy burns bright once more. Thank Episode VII for wonderful new characters, not the least of which is a stormtrooper with a conscience.
Sweet Finn. He’s been raised to follow orders, to be a soldier, to fight and to kill for the First Order. His heart should be as cold and sterile as the barracks he calls home. And yet, he’s kind. He cares. He connects remarkably easily with others, forming near instant friendships and affection.
When he’s knocked off his feet by an explosion, his reaction is to make certain his companion is unharmed.
Though his instincts guide him to run far away, he goes back for the girl who has been defined by being left behind.
He deserves every hug he gets.
Shoulder clap and nod of you-can-do-it-ness: he deserves that too.
Bonus: John Bodega is, from everything I’ve seen, a lovely human being and a bit of a nerd. Perfection.
Honorable Mention: Leopold Fitz. I want to hug him pretty much every time he’s on screen.
